Game Reviews #13 - The Darkness II
Platform: Steam
Store Page
Price I Paid: Free! (TremorGames)
I'm gonna put it straight out there, I didn't play the first game because I didn't think it looked any good. I only got this game because it was cheap on TremorGames, I'll probably be able to get the game pretty cheap somewhere now so I'll pick up the first one and give that a review further down the line.
So, story wise from what I can gather, Jackie got rid of his tentacle octopus backpack of death thing and decides to go out for a nice meal with his friends or something, then it all goes topsy turvy and the restaurant turns into a gun fight, with Jackie releasing the Darkness once more to aid him when he almost died. That's all I'm saying, no more of the story shall be revealed.
The controls are the usual, walking is WASD and so on, pick up guns is Q, slash your tentacles with the mouse. It's very smooth gameplay and enjoyable fun. You can stun an enemy with Q and then hit Q again to do a variety of moves on them, such as the "Wishbone" and the "Eat his heart and get more health" moves.
Gun wise, there isn't much ammo, which is nice, you can just eat people and steal their ammo instead. I must say, the AI is stupid, they have sticks, I have a Kalashnikov and mutant death arms, so they decided to run at me. Poor buggers never stood a chance. But it's fun, certainly not worth £20, it's a bit lacking, the plot is generic. Character X likes Now Dead Character Y etc etc etc...
Another major problem is the light. Yeah, you'll be stopping every five or so seconds to shoot out a light to shoot a box to open a door and shoot a light. It gets repetitive, very fast. it makes sense, but it becomes a chore rather than a feature.
A fun little game that you may or may not enjoy with some neat little mechanics, however it's let down by it's generic plot and a couple of annoying mechanics to balance out the good stuff. It's also expensive which is a problem for a 4 or so year old game.
The Darkness 2 gets a 7/10
